Cyprus Hiking Treks That You Shouldn’t Miss

IMG_39399If you feel the need to get away and like the idea of hiking through fantastic scenery in nice weather, then why not consider a package holiday in Cyprus? Package holidays easily translate to all-out funespecially if they are pre-planned and well organized. That’s certainly true for hiking treks in Cyprus, which has many hiking trails ranging in quality from pretty good to fantastic. Plus, hiking the mountains in the island will enable you to experience Cyprus’ rich history.

Trek Quality

What makes a great hiking trail is a matter of personal taste. For some people it’s the towering mountains, for others, it’s the rich woodlands filled with living nature, or it’s the coast and its rugged cliffs. So some initial research will be necessary to help you choose which treks in Cyprus are best suited to you. Here are three of them well worth mentioning.

Akamas Peninsula Coastal Walk

This is a fantastic trek with great views, but at 12 miles in length with some steep rises, it calls for a bit of endurance and stamina. The rocky ground can be a bit hard-going, too, so wear good hiking boots. As there are no amenities on this trail, make sure you take enough water with you.

Madari Trail

At eight miles long, this trek in the Troodos mountains takes in the island’s second highest mountain, Adelfoi, at over 5,000 feet above sea level and offers amazing views over the island. Adelfoi is high enough to get snowfall between December and March, so take appropriate clothing if you hike then.

Avakas Gorge

Also in the Akamas Peninsula, this rugged trail over 8 miles long passes through Avakas Gorge for almost two miles and is for the more adventurous hiker. That’s mainly because if the weather isn’t right it can be tricky and even hazardous in places, especially when the river is flowing faster and deeper than usual after heavy rain. There’s a bit of clambering over large and sometimes slippery rocks involved, so sturdy footwear is essential. The effort is worth it, however. The scenery is fantastic and there are pleasant flower and plant-rich woodlands on the trail.

There are many trails to be discovered in Cyprus, each with its special charms and also challenges. If you’re new to hiking, keep those challenges in mind and plan accordingly. Dress for the conditions you’ll encounter. Know your limits and choose treks that you feel confident you can handle. That way you’ll get maximum enjoyment.
