Ridiculously expensive? The Real Cost of Food in Hawaii

  • Share

Over and over again people’s eyes would widen as they emphasized to me the exorbitant cost of food in Hawaii. I actually began to worry about whether or not I had saved enough money for my month long trip. On my first trek to the grocery store I found eggs, salsa, and cheese for half off! I also bought celery, carrots, a large onion and flour tortillas. Guess how much all of that cost me?! (Leave your guess in the comments, scroll to bottom for the answer!) How much groceries cost in Hawaii cost of living hawaii I was pleasantly surprised, the grand total was $22.48. Mcdonalds does have a dollar menu here, you can shop at local farmer’s markets, food trucks, and the supermarket sales. Of course a lot of things are more expensive here but food doesn’t have to be.

Thanks for the info Anna. I have also wondered how much of a difference there is in food prices between the mainland states and Hawaii. Keep the great info coming!

Wow, that’s incredible. I live here and I don’t even get those kinds of prices for those kinds of foods! I lived in NYC and LA, but everytime I came home I’d go on a severe diet from veggies and fruits, which in other places are cheaper but not in Hawaii. Everything you have on that table is cheaper in the mainland U.S., with the exception of the onion and celery. ha ha.. What grocery store did you go to with all that stuff discounted?

We found the same thing–sure we paid $8 for a gallon of milk, but we were able to find good deals on pretty much everything else!

We lived on St Croix in The Caribbean for years and groceries were expensive there too. We always figured it the added cost of shipping everything to the island. Some things were just silly though, like we would see mangos from south America in the supermarket for ridicules prices when the trees outside were full of them.
