Kayaking-Charleston, South Carolina

  • Share

This was my first time kayaking in the Ocean! What an exciting experience! The scenery was beautiful. My kayak tour was with Nature Adventures Kayak, Canoe and Paddleboard Outfitters. You do need to be in reasonable shape to keep up with this tour. Our knowledgeable tour guide Ben is the owner of On Purpose Adventures. We received some basic paddle instruction, began paddling down the peaceful Shem Creek and Ben explained all about the ecosystem of the marsh. After that we paddled past the colorful shrimp boats out to Crab Bank island. The island is a preserve for  thousands of nesting shorebirds including the state threatened species Wilsons Plover and Eastern Brown Pelicans. As we paddled past historical Charleston mansions Ben explained the history of the area-it was very interesting. Our day ended perfectly with a dolphin sighting as we paddled back!

I went kayaking for the first time (in a perfectly still lake) this summer and I was amazed at how easy I found it – but I was also tired out after just an hour!

We LOVE paddling through places like this– have done it on two different GA islands as well as Outer Banks, North Carolina. It’s a little weird, given the geographical proximity, but I’ve never actually been to the SC coast. Suppose I need to change that soon.
