O-Ku Restaurant-Charleston, South Carolina

  • Share

I was craving sushi so I decided to try O-Ku, Charleston’s fancy sushi place. When we arrived they told us there would be a twenty minute wait, we went next door and grabbed a drink so it went by really fast. We were seated far in the back close to the the sushi chefs. The restaurant was packed, loud and there were several extremely obnoxious drunk guys around us. They actually kicked one of them out. Our server was friendly and we ordered some edamame and miso soup to start. Both were good! Our server took a while, but it was very busy. We ordered a “Firecracker Roll” and the Chicken Teriyaki entree. Our food took a long time, so I used the time to wait in line for the bathroom. The chicken teriyaki was great, it had a hint of rosemary. The rice it came with was above average, a little sweeter than normal rice. The “Firecracker” roll was incredible! It is a crab salad, avocado, asparagus tempura roll topped with spicy Japanese fish, Serrano pepper, and eel sauce. One of the best rolls I have ever had! It was just the right amount of spicy!

Oku was a little overpriced for me but I have heard Monday, Wednesday, and Friday they have a fantastic happy hour with half-price rolls, sake, and cocktails.

This is not the place to go for a quiet dinner but the food is phenomenal!

Love the cheeky chef photo! The sushi sounded great. I love sushi but there is no place like that around here. Although marks and Spencer’s and tesco have started to sell small boxes. Love the pickled ginger. Having read your article I fancy a miso soup with seaweed now. Had a good one in London a while a go!
