The Best Things to Do in Faro

Faro is one of the more interesting places to visit in the Algarve in Portugal. From its attractive beach to its rich history and natural beauty, Faro is a destination that shouldn’t be missed for anyone thinking of visiting this popular tourist area in Portugal. Travel costs shouldn’t be prohibitive either, as there are inexpensive flights to Faro available from cities such as Boston and New York.

Se Cathedral

With its origins in the 13th Century, Faro’s Cathedral has certainly experienced some dramatic events. It was badly damaged by fire at the end of the 16th Century, and was then badly damaged again by an earthquake around 150 years later. The cathedral today will appeal to those visitors who appreciate painting and sculpture, while, also to be seen here, is impressive work in marble and wood. Se Cathedral is open to visitors from 10am, and, as well as looking around the cathedral itself, there’s the chance to view parts of the city from the cathedral’s bell tower.

Archaeological Museum

In keeping with its collection of Roman artifacts, visitors can walk around Faro’s Archaeological Museum on an attractive mosaic floor. Along with the Roman era, there are artifacts housed in the museum that date back to prehistoric times and up to the Medieval period, as well as paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Travelers can also finish off their visit by enjoying a pleasant walk in the museum’s courtyard.

Ria Formosa Natural Park

On the outskirts of Faro is Ria Formosa Natural Park. Known for being one of Portugal’s 7 Natural Wonders there are a variety of ways of exploring the park, including through guided walks to even in a kayak. Ria Formosa Natural Park is particularly renowned for the variety of its bird life, and seahorses flourish here.

Praia de Faro

A very accessible sandy beach that stretches for miles, Praia de Faro is also well equipped with bars, cafes and restaurants. Shops are also within easy reach. For the more adventurous there’s windsurfing and jet skiing opportunities here, too.

Trem Municipal Gallery of Art

In the Trem Municipal Gallery of Art you’ll find temporary displays of work by artists, photographers and sculptors. The work in this gallery isn’t just created by local artists either, but by international artists also.

Faro is a city that should appeal to both young and old. While the bygone feel of the Cidade Velha area of Faro is just one excellent example of why this city will charm you enough to want to revisit.

I was so close to going to Faro last summer when I was living in Europe, and am really sad I didn’t get the chance to. I’m hoping to get back soon though, and Portugal is at the top of my list!

I haven’t been to Portugal yet, but this looks amazing! It sounds like Portugal is an untapped/hidden treasure people don’t think to visit because of so many other great tourist sites in Europe. I’ll have to make a priority to check it out if I go back to Europe soon!
